Haji Kasam was the manager of the ship Vaitarna, known as "Vijali". The ship was called "Vijali" because it was decorated with electrical bulbs. The ship disappeared in the year 1888 off the coast of Saurashtra region of Gujarat in the cyclonic storm during a journey from Mandvi to Bombay. As per the folklore, more than 1300 people on board went missing in the disaster. The incident resulted in the creation of nautical lore and songs.
