The first round of the FIFA World Cup 2018 has finished. We have got top 16 teams qualified for the knockouts. As Australia is out of the tournament, it's time to get behind a new team for the Round of 16. Before that, let's look at some interesting facts about the league round of 2018 FIFA World Cup.


The first round of the FIFA World CUP 2018 comes to an end. Some of the top teams have qualified for the next stage while current champion Germany were eliminated from the league round. Out of 32, 16 teams are a step closer to their dream of winning the tournament.

SBS Gujarati presents some interesting facts about the league stage of 2018 FIFA World Cup.

  • The current champion Germany eliminated from the World Cup after their loss to South Korea. It was the consecutive third time that the current champion team failed to qualify for the next round. Earlier, Italy and Spain were crashed out of the World Cup in 2010 and 2014.
  • The Video Assistant Referee technology is being used for the first time in the FIFA World Cup and it has contributed to 99.3 per cent of refereeing decisions in the league round.
  • At the end of the league round, 24 penalties have been given. it has smashed the previous World Cup record.
  • The FIFA Wold Cup in Russia turned to be a "World Cup of late goals" as 27 goals were scored between the 80 to 90 minutes of time.
  • Four games in the current World Cup have seen five or more goals in the match. Only two previous 32-team FIFA World Cup have seen more then four games containing five goals in the match.
