A team of 24 students from Blacktown Girls High School in Sydney's west participated in a three-day international robotics tournament in the US city of Houston in April this year.

They were Australia's first all-girls team to enter the championships when they formed five years ago. The team had to compete with around 400 teams from over 60 countries.

Ritu and Riya Patel were among the Blacktown girls who spent over 120 hours creating their robot Gus, using their school holidays and weekends to work on the project.
