The findings of a groundbreaking clinical trial in Australia and the United States has found the blood-thinning drug does not prolong the life of healthy patients, nor reduce their risk of a first heart attack. 

The Australian-led clinical trial involved 19,000 participants over the age of 70 who had never suffered a heart attack or stroke.

Almost 4 percent of the trial participants who took aspirin experienced some kind of serious bleeding, a well-known side effect of the medication.

The study demands a review of aspirin use.
