A kidney racket has been busted in Mumbai wherein five doctors, including the CEO and director of a top private hospital in Mumbai were arrested on Tuesday for their alleged involvement in the kidney selling racket.
Dr Sujit Chattarjee (CEO), Dr Anurag Naik, Medical Director, Dr Mukesh Shete, Dr Mukesh Shah and Dr Prakash Shetty of Dr LH Hiranandani hospital in Mumbai were arrested on Tuesday night.
According to The Times of India, Mumbai police was tipped off last month about illegal kidney transplants being carried out at Hiranandani Hospital.
It was found that in many cases, donors and recipients were not related and the operations were performed based on fake names and documentation.
According to a report by Scroll, Surat resident Brijkishore Jaiswal was to receive a donor kidney from his wife Rekha Devi. However, one Shobha Thakur was put down as his wife, Rekha Devi, who was selling her kidney in exchange for Rs 3 lakh.
The Mumbai police identified Bhijendra Bisen alias Sandeep as the mastermind behind the racket, who allegedly lured poor residents from Gujarat to sell their kidneys.
Mumbai Police and the state health department’s investigation found that many from the hospital were involved in the racket.
The hospital spokesperson said that they were conducting an internal inquiry and will only comment once it's over.
The doctors have been charged under The Transplantation of Human Organ Act, 1994, police said. The accused will be produced in court today.
