Two weeks back, SBS Hindi reported how Sydney based Indian family lost their 7-year-old son – Deyaan Udani in Mumbai. The little boy donated four organs giving lease of life to four other kids and became the youngest organ donor in the country.
Now an Indian daily has reported that Udaani family drove 3000 people to pledge their organs during an event organised in Mumbai on Sunday. Deyaan’s elder sister Naisha addressed a large gathering in Mumbai’s Dadar and shared how she and her brother learnt about organ donation at Quakers Hill Public School in Sydney.
“We found out that our mother had pledged her organs but our father had not. Deyaan and I had told him that instead of becoming ashes, he could save so many lives,” Naisha told the gathering.
Moved by the little girl’s appeal, around 3000 people signed the pledge forms.
The gathering was also attended by the four beneficiaries who received Deyaan’s organs. His kidneys, heart and liver gave four people a fresh shot at life.
The Times of India reported that the recipient of Deyaan's heart was a seven-year-old girl from Goregaon, who is recuperating well post-transplant. "Deyaan came into our lives like an angel and gave us the greatest gift. It is priceless to see your child smile and talk," said the teary-eyed mother of the Goregaon girl.
She remembered the day doctors had told her that their daughter would not live beyond a week. "I had fallen unconscious. It was unbearable," she said. The Goregaon family has now decided to devote themselves to the cause of organ donation. "Our family will propagate and donate when the time comes," the heart recipient's mother announced.
