Victorian government is conducting a feasibility study through council to determine the viability of an Indian cultural precinct in Wyndham, Melbourne West.
Following long consultation, the state government allocated $500,000 for creation of two Indian cultural precincts in 2015. Dandenong and Wyndham were chosen in Melbourne.
In April this year, the state government announced Monash in Melbourne’s south east could be home to Victoria’s next Indian cultural centre.
Monash City Council was granted $50,000 for a feasibility study to examine the needs of the local Indian community, identify service gaps and assess the viability of a community centre for the area.
With sites already earmarked for Dandenong and Wyndham, these hubs are aimed to provide a space for Indian people to come together and celebrate their culture and heritage with the broader community.
The Wyndham city council is now executing an online survey asking residents where they’d like to see the precinct located, and what form they’d like the precinct to take.
ACIL Allen Consulting and SGS Economics and Planning are conducting this feasibility study on behalf of Wyndham City Council.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE?
Members of Wyndham’s community are invited to have a say through an online survey at wyndham.vic.gov.au/indianculturalprecinct.
Wyndham mayor Henry Barlow told The Star Weekly the study would help decide if the Wyndham community was in support of an Indian cultural precinct.
“Our community is made up of people from many different cultural backgrounds and council supports opportunities to share these cultures,” Cr Barlow said.
The survey closes on Wednesday 14 June and the feasibility study is expected to be completed in July 2017.
