Nearly one in five Australians speak a language other than English at home*, yet rates of language learning are on the decline.
With more than 300 languages spoken, the SBS National Languages Competition hopes to inspire young Australians to explore and embrace what it is to be an Australian in all our diversity and contribute to the retention and continuing development of language learning.
The theme for the 2016 SBS National Languages Competition is ‘What does learning a language mean to you?’
Community Languages Australia students aged four to seven are encouraged to draw a picture that illustrates what learning another language means to them, while the secondary primary and senior categories are to write their responses in language.

How to enter
WHAT DOES LEARNING A LANGUAGE MEAN TO YOU?
Three categories for entry:
Senior (ages 13-18) – Write a maximum of 300 words in a language other than English to describe what learning this language means to you.
Entry form for Senior (ages 13-18)
Secondary Primary (ages 8-12) – Write a maximum of 30 words in a language other than English to describe what learning this language means to you.

Junior Primary (ages 4-7) – Draw a picture to illustrate what learning a language other than English means to you.

Who can enter?
- The competition is only open to students currently studying in CLA approved classes.
- All primary and secondary students can enter.
