Have you ever heard that the judiciary awarded an entire train to someone as compensation?
Recently, Sampuran Singh, a 45-year-old farmer of Katana village in Jalandhar, moved court seeking compensation for his land acquired by the government.
The land was acquired to construct a new railway station.
The court after hearing Mr Singh’s plea awarded him with the Swarna Shatabdi Express train, reports the Hindustan Times.
The Express train runs between Amritsar and New Delhi.
It was in 2007 when the government acquired his land for the Ludhiana-Chandigarh railway line.
The court ordered a compensation of ₹ 1.47 crore to Mr Singh.
But the Railways paid only ₹42 Lakh.
When the Northern Railways failed to provide the due compensation, Mr Singh filed a petition.
The court of additional district and sessions judge Jaspal Verma attached the train number 12030 at the Ludhiana station.
This meant that the train would now be in Mr Singh’s possession.
In addition, the court designated the a station master to Mr Singh.
Mr Singh reached the station along with his lawyer Rakesh Gandhi and took possession of Swarna Shatabdi Express.
As it is not possible for Mr Singh to take the passenger train to his home, the train is at present the court's property.
Anuj Parkash, the Divisional Railway Manager, told As reported by the Hindustan Times that the law ministry will take a look into this matter.
