As India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi told the nation about his government's latest step against black money and tax evasion, NDTV reports that many Indians turned to Google Inc. for help.

"How to convert black money into white money" was trending on the search engine.

The queries surged soon after Modi announced the ban on 500 rupee and 1,000 rupee notes.

"This one decision will change social culture, in the way people keep money and spend," Finance Minister Arun Jaitley told reporters about the government's move.

Jaitley added - "The honest person has the satisfaction to be honest and the not-so-honest worry."

Gujaratis topped the search list on Google.

Google Trends show that people in Maharashtra, Haryana, Punjab and Delhi were also interested in knowing this formula to convert cash stashed away to avoid tax and make it legal.

NDTV reports that Google India didn't immediately respond to an e-mail seeking comment.
