An Indian mother has set a record by delivering a baby weighing 6.8 kgs.
Last month, a Perth mother gave birth to a 6 kilo baby and the child was touted as the heaviest newborn in history. But on Monday, Nandini broke that record when she delivered a 6.8 kg baby girl via a c-section at a hospital in Bengaluru in Southern India.
Apparently the mother and the doctors did not know that the baby she was carrying weighed this much.
“In my 25 years of experience, I have never seen such a big baby,” said Dr Venkatesh Raju, the local health officer. “She is a miracle. I believe she is not only the heaviest baby born in India but the heaviest baby girl ever born in the world.”
According to doctors, newborns tend to be overweight if the mother has thyroid or diabetes during pregnancy. However Nandini didn’t have either condition.
”She does not have any health issues like irregular sugar levels or thyroid and is breathing well,” said Dr Poornima Manu, the gynaecologist who delivered the baby.

“We were initially concerned about her sugar levels but that is normal. The mother had made regular visits for check-ups at the hospital and never showed signs of gestational diabetes or thyroid disorders.
“She came as a big surprise for all of us. The surgery took place for nearly half an hour and it was free of any risk. She is really big and beautiful."
Nandini and her newborn are under observation and will stay in hospital over the next few days till doctors figure out the reason behind baby’s weight. But for now, they feel the mother and the baby are in good health.
