Indian national, Gurdip Singh, is one of the 14 inmates who are likely to face the firing squad this weekend in Indonesia.
The Guardian reported that Indonesia is likely to resume executions of prisoners this week.
The Indonesian government has not released a formal list but lawyers from the Community Legal Aid Institute compiled a list of those it believes are likely to be executed and that list has Indian national Gurdip Singh on it.
48-year-old Gurdip Singh, who hails from Jalandhar, Punjab was found guilty of trying to smuggle 300 grams of heroin into Indonesia in 2004 and was sentenced to death by the state district court in Tangerang in Banten province in February 2005.
The Guardian reported that the prosecutors had initially recommended a sentence of 20 years for Singh.
Singh, who has been in custody for over a decade, earlier made a statement against another Pakistani national Zulfiqar Ali but later retracted it. Singh admitted he was forced to make a statement against Ali in return for a more lenient sentence for himself.
Meanwhile, India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday tweeted saying that government was making last minute efforts to save an Indian man facing execution today in Indonesia in a drug related case.
