Indian woman files dowry-complaint against Australia based husband and in-laws

Brisbane based Manbir Kaur has filed a complaint against her husband and in-laws in India alleging dowry-related harassment.

Brisbane based Manbir Kaur has filed a complaint against her husband and in-laws in India alleging dowry-related harassment, The Times of India reports.

Kaur, in her complaint, states her husband, his parents and three sisters have been demanding dowry and were harassing her physically and mentally.

Phagwara police have registered a case under Sections 498A/406 of the Indian Penal Code against Kaur’s Brisbane-based NRI husband and family members.

Manbir Kaur who hails from Phagwara, Punjab married an NRI based in Brisbane, Australia on December 12, 2008.

She travelled to Australia with her husband in March 2009 where she gave birth to their daughter.

She alleged that her-in-laws started torturing her after the delivery of their child and were demanding more dowry.

Kaur alleged that after the wedding, her family had given dowry and paid Rs 10 lakh for her in-laws' tickets to Australia, police said.

Police said the accused have been booked under relevant sections of the anti-dowry Act and for criminal breach of trust.
