A university student enrolled at the University of NSW has been arrested and jailed for depositing over $4 million which appeared to have been earned through criminal activities.
19-year-old Yi Feng arrived in Australia on a tourist visa in July 2014. Within two weeks of his arrival, he had started depositing large amounts of cash to banks.
Originally, from Beijing, Yi Feng, was out on bail till Friday but was taken into custody after he appeared at the Downing Centre District Court.
According to the statement of facts, Feng deposited money in to atleast a dozen bank accounts spread across Commonwealth and Westpac banks in the country.
Last October, Feng pleaded guilty to possessing proceeds of crime in excess of $100,000, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
Before this, he had made atleast 68 such deposits totalling $4,056,930.
The agreed facts also state that Feng was acting under orders from someone known as ‘brother’ and was constantly in touch with him through the social networking app ‘WeChat’.
Feng missed classes at the university to carry out these tasks and he structured his lifestyle around this work, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
