While sentencing, Justice Michael Elkaim said the assault was "a single act of immense stupidity, which had the potential to result in the most severe of consequences".

The Judge took into account Sharma's guilty plea and his previous good character but said the court had an obligation to send a message of deterrence.

Sharma was forced to hand himself to police after ACT Police posted the CCTV footage on Facebook and the video went viral.

Sharma will serve nine months in prison with the rest of his sentence to be suspended.
