A national level Indian athlete, Pooja Kumari died in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh on Saturday.
Kumari, a steeplechase athlete was near a pond at the Sports Authority of India Academy in Bhopal when this accident occurred.
NDTV reported that Kumari along with her two friends was returning after a practice session when they stopped at the pond after seeing some fishes in it.
The trio then decided to take a selfie when suddenly Pooja slipped and fell in the pond. Pooja started to drown as she did not know how to swim. The other two athletes too did not know how to swim and ran towards the hostel for help.
She was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead.
"She was immediately taken to the hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival," said assistant sub-inspector Sunil Dubey.
Additional superintendent of police Rajesh Singh Chandel said the 21-year-old, originally from Uttarkhand's Kashipur, was staying at the SAI hostel Bhopal for last three years for training.
