Thousands of Australian students were evacuated from classrooms across New South Wales and Victoria after a bizarre wave of hoax bomb threats was made to schools in NSW and Victoria.
Police carried out evacuation operations in schools that received the threat and swooped down to check for any suspicious baggage or parcels in the school premises.
Atleast 12 schools across the state – 8 in NSW and 4 in Victoria, received these bomb threats.
Panicked parents rushed to the schools to pick up their wards and the news created quite some mayhem in the parent circles, many of whom had to leave work early to attend to their children.
Police have now revealed that this string of bomb hoax calls came from overseas.
According to report published in Daily Mail, UK, it has also been revealed that schools in Britain, France, Netherlands and Tokyo too received these hoax calls.
"The threats appear to come from overseas with no credible evidence they could be carried out here. There is no evidence these are anything other than hoaxes designed to cause unnecessary disruption and inconvenience ... The purpose and exact source of the threats remains unknown,” a statement from NSW Police said.
According to a report in the SMH, Police have also revealed that these phone messages were automated recorded calls that contained no religious, political or ideological references which might link them to a particular terrorist group.
Authorities have assured parents that best possible security measures were put in place to ensure the security of students.
