Car thieves are targeting Audi owners in Sydney. Such thefts, in similar fashion, have also been registered in Melbourne.
Here’s how they steal your AUDI. Members of the car-theft racket are breaking into these luxurious cars and stealing an emergency spare key, the owners have left in the glove box. Thieves have been taking advantage of the ‘convenience key’ provided by the manufacturer.
NSW Police have told Fairfax Media that 11 separate incidents were registered within 24 hours in Sydney’s northern suburbs.
“Thieves smash a window and then take the spare key. Sometimes they drive off right away. And sometimes they come later on to steal the cars when owners are away,” a police officer was quoted saying.
Here’s what AUDI says. The Audi website warns customers that storing a spare key anywhere inside the vehicle is a security risk and that "there may also be insurance implications if your vehicle is stolen and it was discovered that a spare key was inside at the time." Be wary of leaving your vehicle and its key(s) with third parties, for example valet parking. There is a potential risk of additional keys being coded while in their possession.
Similar Audi-related thefts have also recently occurred in Melbourne and Britain.
