The 26th January 2020 is approaching but there are 10 things you should know about this day-the Australia Day:
- The first fleet isn't actually arrived on the 26th of January 1788.
- First sanctioned marriage between an Aboriginal woman and a convict occurred on the 26th of January 1824.
- Kenneth Henry said that the 1888 centenary celebrations are 'a reminder that European have robbed Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait of their land.'
- Aboriginal protest against the Australia Day as 'Day of Mourning'.
- Aboriginal was forced to participate in the reenactment of the first fleet on the 150th Anniversary.
- An Aboriginal Tent Embassy was set up on the lawn opposite the Australia Parliament House on the 26th of January 1972 to protest that European made Aboriginal alienated in their own country.
- More than 40,000 people march in Sydney to advocate for Aboriginal rights and marking 200 years of the British invasion.
- Archie Roach's 1988 protest song: 'Keep your handouts and give us back our land'.
- Australia Day is not consistently celebrated by very state and territories until 1994.
- The Aboriginal flag was not put on the Sydney Harbour Bridge together with the Australian flag on Australia Day until 2013.
