Australian government announced its 3 steps to COVID-19 safe in order to give Australians opportunities to go back to normal life, return to work, and to open business but at the same time make sure that safety are maintained.


The Australian government today (8 May 2020) announced its 3 steps to COVID-19 safety and inform state and territory that they will have to make decisions to start each step as they see fit. 

The three steps to COVID-19 safety are:

  • Step 1: Gradually allowing Australians go back to work and allowing gatherings up to 10 people outside family home, and 5 visitors can visit a family in their homes, 5 people in the same family are allowed to travel withing their local communities, local state or regional areas.
  • Step 2: 20 people are allowed to gather this means that beauty salons, gyms, nightclubs, pubs, cafes, restaurants, entertainment venues, galleries and museums will be opened. Trans tasman travelling will be allowed with some interstate travelling.
  • Step 3: Up to 100 people will be allowed to gather but some restrictions are still in place, some international travelling will be allowed for return Australians, international students, to Pacific Islands. 
However there are still some restrictions that people in Australia must follow:

  • Social distancing of 1.5 metres from another person must be adhere.
  • Hand hygiene and cough and sneeze hygiene are required.
  • Stay home if you feel unwell, testing for COVID-19 is recommended for those who have respiratory symptoms and fever.
  • Download COVIDSafe app so we can track the virus quickly.
  • Having plans to keep workplace stay safe or plan to do something safely.
From mid night tonight ACT will begin waive some of its restrictions and allows 10 people to gather either indoor or outdoor. South Australia will start its first step from midnight of the 11 May 2020. Queensland announced that it will start the 1st step from midnight of the 15 May 2020, while Victoria will still stick to its current restriction for at least another week.

People in Australia must stay at least 1.5 metres away from others and gatherings are limited to two people unless you are with your family or household.
