"What I can tell you is that lots of Australians are trying to lose weight. Yes they are trying different diets all the time, and there is lot of guess work that goes into dieting yeah, they did a lot of trial and error. And with advance in science, and also with in technology, we can now understand people's DNA a lot better. And cost effectively get a sample with someone, get their DNA, and then sent them report that tells them how their unique body process certain type of food, and providing them a report that is personalized report. Yeah so what it is is that rather than guessing what is the best diet for you, doing a very simple cheek flop, we can provide information about what is the best diet for them. For instance, when you get personalized report, it will say base on your genetic profile, you should go on a for example high protein diet or it might say you should go on a low fat diet or diet that is rich in Mediterranean food. And those recommendations aren't just the average recommendations that are suitable for the average person. They are recommendations that are based on how your body work which is what their DNA tell us to optimized and improved the chances of successful with any program that they might go on."
Dr. Rauchberger said that testing personl DNA has been available for all Australians for some time. They can access through participated pharmacies in Australia or through my-DNA. Though it also comes with potential risk to personal privacy and the integrity of DNA data. Therefore he wants people to make sure that they are comfortable with and are happy to do the test only with reputable providers.
He further said that from the past three years there are lots of researches not only about genetics or diets because personalized diets is just a part of solutions, but also about vitamins, exercises, finesses. And all these are just the tip of an iceberg. Therefore, he would like to encourage everyone to understand about their DNA and know their bodies.
Dr. Lior Rauchberger also believed that Australian government should have a health policy which labeled food products and make information available to inform the public about what are the ingredients in particular type of foods. Therefore, people will decide what they want to do with it to stay healthy.
