While Australian government is proposing changes to Australian Citizenship Act, Federal Opposition has sided with the Federation of Ethnic Communities Council of Australia (FECCA) to oppose this changes during their annual meeting and attacking the Turnbull government, claiming it is discriminatory to some of Australian communities and it will have great impacts on Australia's multicultural society.
The Federal Opposition Minister for Multicultural and Citizenship, Tony Burke said that -
"It is the voices of hatred, anger, prejudice."
Mr. Burke further said that if we check the English testing rules, it is sure a design to discriminate some especially migrants or international students from Africa and Asia which have to sit for English test that is the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and they have to score band 6 compare to those from United Kingdom or the North America that do not have to do it. But Mr. Tony Burke said that Australian government should not utilize citizenship for its political gain.
However, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said that -
"the propose changes is to strengthen citizenship, to make Australia stronger. Stronger citizenship and stronger citizens."
And the Assistance minister for social services and multicultural affairs, Zed Seselja also said that Australia supports diversity and having the capacity to speak English is very important.
"Australia should celebrate diversity and its multicultural communities, either cultures or languages and English language is suppose to be something that unify Australia as a nation ", said Zed Seselja.
