Why did Ms Su Yaj (Shu Tan) win World Responsible Tourism Community Initiative Award 2017 and how do judges decide their winners?


Ms Shu Tan, is a Hmong lady in Sapa, northern Vietnam. She is the founder of Sapa O'Chao Social Enterprise which provides Eco-tourism services to tourists who visit Sapa where Hmong is among other ethnic minorities living in this town. Income receiving from this enterprise is utilized to create opportunities for poor rural communities.

"The Responsible Tourism Award I have received is for organization who initiated programs to create educational and employment opportunities for youg people." Said Shu Tan.

The United Nations has declared its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to make the world fairer and more sustainable in to the future and tourism is part of these goals. The 14th  and 16th goal are to "promote responsible consumption and production as well as peace justice and strong institution and inclusive in social development."1.  Sapa O'Chao mission is part of these objectives.

She said that there are about 200 hundred tourist organizations competing for the World Responsible Tourism Award 2017 which it is divided into 6 different outstanding categories ranging from "best accommodation, carbon reduction, communication, community initiative, poverty reduction and tour operator." 2.

"My future missions are to create a dormitory so poor students have a place to stay so they can study, to create employment opportunities in tourist industries and to promote Hmong culture and share Hmong culture to other nations." Asserted Shu Tan.

She will also attend Global Eco Asia-Pacific Tourism Conference from the 27-29 November 2017 in Adelaide, South Australia as a keynote speaker to share her experience and also learn and share the experience other Australians counterparts about  how Australia run their Eco-tourism.

Last but not least she is expecting to meet and see how Hmong Australian communities and want to see and know how do they live their lives in Australia in terms of education, and employment.
