Nearly four million Australians or one in five Australians are diagnosed with mental issues each year and and it cost Australia economy $20 billion in 2010. Migrant communities are the most vulnerable group when it comes to mental health problem as they are less likey to access mental health services, but what are stopping them?
"According to Hayfa Kaassamani, who works with multicultural background clients at Beyond Blue, confidentiality is the major concern. Dr. Stephen Carbone, the policy, evaluation and Research leader from Beyond Blue also said that in some communities more than others, there might be still some blame and shame attached to mental health issues, but he wants to reassure patients that doctors are not to judge but to help patients get better and recover. So please do not scared, do not be embarrassed and do not worry about a loss of confidentiality."
However, Dr. Stephen Carbone who also from Beyond Blue said that health professionals are not to judges them but to support them. and there are laws in Australia to protect patients privacy and whatever they discussed with health professionals, translators or interpreters are confidential.
Further more, Dr. Carbone would also like to suggest that the best way to deal with mental health issues are people should have enough sleep, eat healthy, exercise and seek professional advice.
