Holiday-makers told to leave fire region as temperatures soar across the country

Temperatures are set to soar over 40C on Monday and Tuesday in parts of Australia, increasing the fire danger in Victoria, NSW, Tasmania and South Australia.

Holiday-makers in Victoria's east have been told to evacuate as a heatwave sweeping across Australia's southern and eastern states worsens dangerous fire conditions. 

Tens of thousands of residents and visitors in East Gippsland in Victoria were told to leave the region by Monday morning, with temperatures set to soar above 40C.

The Bureau of Meteorology expects strong and gusty winds throughout Monday, as well as thunderstorms that will give way to much cooler air across Victoria later during the day.
