Indonesia to stop searching for Sulawesi quake victims

Indonesian rescue workers will stop searching for the bodies of victims of an earthquake and tsunami on the island of Sulawesi on Thursday, the national disaster mitigation agency said on Sunday.

On Sunday, the death toll went up to 1,763, with 2,632 people seriously wounded.

Indonesia's government has said search efforts will continue until October 11, after which they hope people "can start living like normal".

Central Sulawesi was rocked by earthquakes and hit by a tsunami on 28 September. Five days after that, Mount Soputan which is an active volcano located at northern area of the island erupted.  

The Southeast Asian archipelago nation lies on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where tectonic plates collide and many of the world's volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur.
