If you’re one of the thousands of Australians who head to Bali every year, Rinrin Marinka shares your passion. “In my heart, my home town is Bali!”, the popular Indonesian chef says with a laugh when Food Network catches up with her for a phone chat from Jakarta. But as she shows two keen visitors in Wonderful Indonesia Flavours, Indonesia is a country with a hugely varied food culture, from the lesser-known dishes of untamed Raja Ampat in the West Papuan area to the Dutch-Javanese traditions of the heritage city of Solo and the palm sugar and coconut desserts of Tomohon.
“I’ve always wanted to have a show that we can show a lot of Indonesian food, because Indonesian food is very different, one place to another,” says Marinka (who was born Maria Irene Susanto, but these days is known as Marinka professionally, and Rin to her friends and family).
In Wonderful Indonesia Flavours (6.30pm weeknights on Food Network, starting Monday 2 April), Marinka travels across the country with Australian chefs Tobie Puttock and Darren Robertson meeting growers, home cooks and chefs and discovering the local culture and dishes, from street food to historic royal recipes.
