If you have skills or qualifications that Australia needs, you can be nominated for a skilled visa sponsored by an employer.
If you have a successful business overseas, you can be nominated by a state or territory government to establish or manage a business or invest in Australia.
You can also apply as an Independent or Family Sponsored Points Tested visa or a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) – Graduate Work Stream, you must nominate an occupation from the Skilled Occupations List (SOL)
2016-17 Skilled Occupations List (SOL)
- independent points-based skilled migration who are not nominated by a state or territory government agency

The skilled occupations list is reviewed annually to ensure that the skilled roles on the list are appropriate to meet Australia’s needs in the coming year and based on submissions from the industry, employee representatives, trade and professional organisations, and other stakeholders.
The Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) has announced the new Skilled Occupations List (SOL) for 2016-17 and is effective from July 1st, 2016.
