2024 Regional Election: Why are there single candidates?

On 27 Nov 2024 Indonesia will hold Pilkada (Regional Head Elections) simultaneously in 37 provinces and 508 regencies/cities. One of the striking things in this election is the increase in the number of single candidates. What are the implications of this phenomenon for democracy and political parties in Indonesia?

One of the striking things in this election is the increase in the number of single candidates. What are the implications of this phenomenon for democracy and political parties in Indonesia?


Dr Reni Suwarso is a lecturer at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Indonesia She is also the Director of the Institute for Democracy, Security and Strategic Studies.  To SBS Indonesian, Dr Reni Suwarso explained several reasons for the emergence of a single candidate, including money politics, vote buying and leadership failure of the political parties.  All of which can undermine democracy in Indonesia and the lives of many people.
