The high-velocity nature of information technology development often becomes the lure for starting businesses closely tied to the field, such as one producing applications or software. However, is the fast-moving development, especially the parts related to Artificial Intelligence, currently carrying the threat of extinction for certain professions in the world of such technology, such as the professions of coder or designer?
SBS Indonesian visited the career and networking event ICON, which was held by the University of New South Wales’ Indonesian Students Association in Australia (PPIA). During this event, discussions about Artificial Intelligence (AI) was unavoidable, and the daily lives of students these days are replete with AI use, explained the UNSW PPIA President Sultan Muhammad.
During the same event, SBS Indonesian caught up with Samuel Wibawa, a businessman of Indonesian heritage and a software developer offering an application dubbed Collage. Samuel recalled that when he first started studying in 2019, AI tools such as Chat GPT were yet to gain traction.However, within mere years, many more AI products appeared, as well as the practice of vibe coding, where one explains ideas to AI tools, which will create code based on those explanations - in other words, almost no manual coding involved.
There are several tasks that AI is not yet able to do, he continued, such as determining projects’ scales. Moreover, AI can make mistakes, choose less efficient methods, and even hallucinate. Therefore, the role of humans as auditors remains important.
Yu Liu was one of the speakers at ICON. He is currently the Chief Technology Officer at Heidi, an IT company offering tools and applications for health workers. According to him, while his company’s work is AI - heavy, yet the ability to take on more large projects thanks to the use of AI has allowed it to hire more people.
