Prime Minister Anthony Albanese held a state visit to Indonesia following his re-election victory. Albanese's arrival on Wednesday, May 14, 2025 marked his three-day visit to the country.
A warm welcome by President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta was followed by several talks between the two countries.
Randy Wirasta Nandyatama from the Department of International Relations of Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta said Indonesia is a very important country for Australia. This is marked by choosing Indonesia as the first country to visit following Albanese’s victory, he said.
"It is a common characteristic, at least in several previous Prime Ministers' governments, that Indonesia is always the first country they visit when they become Prime Minister. This symbolizes the importance of that country to Australia," Randy said.
A private conversation between the two leaders was held and continued with a bilateral meeting between the Indonesian and Australian delegations. A number of important sectoral and regional topics were on the agenda of the meeting.
