Australia needs more information on ethnicity in its COVID data-gathering

In Australia though, data on COVID-19 and ethnicity is scarce prompting calls for it to be collected in the fight against the pandemic.


The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners has created a campaign in-language, to better reach out to migrant communities. 

The expert said having better data on who is coming forward for testing could help inform public health initiatives.

Under the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System, there's no legal obligation for states and territories to collect any data on ethnicity, with the exception of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander indicator.

That's despite the 2016 census finding nearly half of all Australians were either born overseas or had a parent who was born overseas.
