As artificial intelligence transforms the world, researchers hope the success rate of IV-F will further improve for people looking to start a family. Currently, about a third of women manage to have a baby in their first IV-F cycle.
In the 1990s Professor David Gardner developed the embryo assessment system we use today and he now serves as Scientific Director at Melbourne IV-F.
Back then, embryologists examined only one image.
Now embryonic development is filmed as time-lapse, with A-I used to analyse thousands of images.
Experts are also investigating whether A-I can help personalise fertility treatment, by analysing our genes.
