Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, known as PFAS are a group of 4,000 synthetic chemicals that can be added to household products to make them heat-resistant, stain-resistant, oil-proof or water-repellent.
This material is widely used in cosmetics to help smooth the skin or make products more durable - for example, long-lasting lipsticks, eyeshadows and foundation.
New Zealand has banned the use of PFAS chemicals. The European Union is gradually abolishing it as well, and more and more states in the US are restricting the use of PFAS chemicals in cosmetics.
But experts say Australia is 'far left' when it comes to limiting exposure to this type of chemical.
