A lack of safety protections for Australia's online food delivery sector is under scrutiny after a series of recent deaths involving delivery riders.

Data obtained exclusively by SBS News shows safety incidents involving food delivery riders are happening across several states in Australia, and advocates say the numbers are only the surface of the problem.

In a statement, UberEats said:

"Safety is fundamental to us and we have instituted a number of measures over recent years to keep those who use the platform safe, including onboarding modules covering road and bike safety, an annual cycling safety test, and cycling specific navigation."

And it says it has a support package "should something go wrong" with an UberEats rider.

Industry talks have began with the New South Wales government this week to enhance safety in the sector.
