Australians in three states will be offered three hours of free electricity in the middle of the day, under a scheme to share abundant solar energy harvested outside peak hours.

Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen announced the new Solar Sharer program in three eastern states.

The scheme will be offered to consumers in New South Wales, South Australia and southeast Queensland from mid-2026, with negotiations underway to expand it to other states by 2027.

The program requires energy companies to provide at least three hours of free solar electricity to households during the day, when solar power production is at an all-time high.
