I Gusti Putu Danny Karya Nugraha, Head of Indonesian Intelligence (BIN) in Papua was killed in an ambush on Sunday 25 April. He is the first high ranking Indonesian officer to be killed in the conflict. President Joko Widodo ordered that the perpetrators be hunted down.
Researcher Dr Adriana Elisabeth heads the Papuan Studies team at the Indonesian Institute for Science (LIPI.) She explains the ramifications of the killing and assesses the usefulness of different possible Government responses.
