A senior Muslim figure has spoken out about the rise of far-right political groups in Australia, as thousands of Muslims gathered to celebrate the end of Ramadan.Politicians also condemned bigotry and hatred as they joined Australian Muslims marking Eid al-Fitr, a religious holiday celebrated by more than 1.6 billion Muslims worldwide.


Prayers being played over a loudspeaker woke the streets of Lakemba, in Sydney southwest, as the sun rose on Eid al-Fitr.

Up to 40,000 people gathered at Lakemba Mosque, spilling out into nearby streets, to mark the end of Ramadan.

President of the Lebanese Muslim Association (LMA) Samir Dandan told the crowds he was concerned about the rise of far-right views Australia, in light of the weekend's election results.
