The Responsibility to Protect (R2P) is a commitment made by member countries of the United Nations to prevent genocide. Indonesia recently voted against a proposal to make the R2P a standing annual agenda item. The Indonesian Foreign Ministry offered an explanation for its stance but many people questioned the Government’s commitment to safe-guarding human rights.


Nurina Savitri is the Media and Campaign Manager for Amnesty International Indonesia. She explains the key principles of R2P and why Amnesty International believes it would have been advantageous for Indonesia to have supported the proposal.
