The acting minister for immigration, Allan Tudge, has introduced legislation allowing access to more free English classes.

The law would amend the Immigration (Education) Act 1971, to provide greater access to free English education for migrants to Australia.

From the end of 2021, applicants for a partner visa and permanent resident sponsor must prove that they have made reasonable efforts for the applicant to study English.

The amendment to the law includes research showing that 510 hours is not a realistic time frame for most migrants to reach a functional level of English and that people need more time to reach an acceptable level.
