The government has issued a regulation prohibiting teens under the age of 16 from having accounts on several social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook and threads owned by Meta.
It is the world's first age ban that will go into effect December 10.
Included in the ban are the Meta media platforms that manage Instagram, Threads, and Facebook.
While other platforms such as YouTube, Snapchat, TikTok, X, and live streaming platform Kick are also covered under the ban Roblox gaming platform still remains excluded for now.
Meta announced that it has started notifying teens of users aged 13 to 15 on Instagram, Threads, and Facebook about restrictions on their account access.
Full access and content will be restored automatically as soon as they reach the age of 16.
For users aged 16 and over who received this notification in error, they can appeal using self-verification via video selfies or official government identification marks.
Mia Garlick, Meta's Regional Policy Director, encourages affected teens to make plans to stay connected with their relatives in the future.
