The World Health Organisation's weekend announcement that Monkeypox represented a global health emergency has been welcomed with relief by doctors and scientists. Monkeypox cases have ballooned since the WHO committee first met at the end of June.

The World Health Organisation's weekend announcement that Monkeypox represented a global health emergency has been welcomed with relief by doctors and scientists. Monkeypox cases have ballooned since the WHO committee first met at the end of June.


The announcement at the weekend by World Health Organisation Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus triggers a coordinated international response to Monkeypox.

It can also unlock funding to collaborate on sharing vaccines and treatments.

Health experts have welcomed the W-H-O's decision to declare the emergency.
