More than one percent of humanity are now refugees.

According to a United Nations Human Rights Commission report, displacement caused by conflict, persecution and violence is now affecting one in every 97 people. It's the highest recorded number of displaced people as reported by UNHCR, nearly 80 million people forcibly displaced around the world. UNHCR ‘s annual Global Trends report estimates 40 per cent of those are children below 18 years of age, tens of thousands of whom are said to be unaccompanied.


UNHCR believes the number of displaced people has increased for two main reasons.

The first factor is ongoing conflict in multiple countries and the crisis in Venezuela.  However, one of UNHCR’s biggest concerns for the future is climate change and natural disasters.
