New figures show almost a million Australians have lost their jobs since social distancing measures designed to limit the spread of coronavirus came into place.

Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show one in three workers from the food and accommodation sector has lost their job amid the economic fallout of the crisis.

Food and accommodation workers aged 20 to 29 and those over 70 were the hardest hit, with more than 40 per cent of those age groups now out of work.

The figures also show nearly a third of the jobs in the arts and recreation were lost between mid-March and April.

People in Australia must stay at least 1.5 metres away from others. Check your state’s restrictions on gathering limits.

Testing for coronavirus is now widely available across Australia. If you are experiencing cold or flu symptoms, arrange a test by calling your doctor or contact the Coronavirus Health Information Hotline on 1800 020 080.

The Federal Government's coronavirus tracing app COVIDSafe is available for download from your phone's app store.
