International student graduations will be curtailed next year as the government seeks to limit migration from abroad.

In total, the number of students in 2025 who will be accepted to study at Australian universities is 270,000 students

145,000 places available at publicly funded universities, similar to levels in 2023, while the vocational education sector will experience a 20 per cent reduction from previous levels, with only 95,000 places available.

The government said the restrictions would ensure the sector was sustainable in the future, but would also help limit the level of overseas migration.

There was a 73 per cent increase in arrivals in the last financial year to Australia compared with the previous year, with concerns from opposition parties and some in the community about the impact on the housing system.
