World leaders have come together virtually to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the Paris climate accord, which sets the goal of keeping global temperatures from rising above levels that could have a significant impact on humanity.

76 world leaders have given their virtual pledges to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the Paris climate accord.

Events - hosted by France, UK, Italy, Chile and the United Nations - saw leaders from more than 70 countries pledge to step up their efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions that fuel global warming.

A number of major emitters - including Australia, Saudi Arabia, Russia and Mexico - were not invited to attend, or speak, at the summit because their climate actions were deemed not ambitious enough.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres praised China's commitment to the goal.
