Lunar New Year travel quieter than expected

The potential boom in Chinese tourism during the Lunar New Year holiday appears to be disappointing, as most travelers choose to stay in China, if they go anywhere. From the beaches of Bali to the ski slopes of Hokkaido, tour operators say the trips Chinese locals often seen in pre-Covid days are not realized.


Businesses said of their disappointment to the holiday period this time around.

Many tourism operators hope the pandemic period is over, after Beijing loosened travel restrictions and stopped requiring long quarantine periods.

However, bookings for overseas trips have increased, suggesting it is only a matter of time before that industry recovers.
