Australia's medicines regulator won't be rushed into approving the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, despite the shot being given safety clearance in Britain.

The Health Minister says an initial March roll-out here is likely, and to boost public confidence in the product, politicians could be among the first to receive it.

The Pfizer shot given emergency approval in Britain is one of four potential vaccines pre-purchased by the Federal Government for use in Australia.

Australia's drug monitoring agency TGA's Therapeutic Goods Administration said the launch of a Pfizer vaccine in the UK will provide valuable information to authorities here about the vaccine's effectiveness.
