Nearly 200 countries, including Australia, have agreed to negotiate and finalize a legally binding plastics treaty by 2024.

The COVID pandemic has caused a surge in online ordering of goods around the world. That means an increase in plastic packaging to protect those orders when they are posted.
Meanwhile, less than 14% of the global figure 86 million tons of plastic packaging produced is recycled. Most are sent to landfill, burned, or end up in waterways.
Australians throw away about two and a half million tonnes of plastic packaging per year. Of that, 130,000 tonnes are released into our marine environment.
To help reduce that burden, more than one million Australians are expected to help on Australia Cleanup Day, with the primary focus on pandemic waste.
