Australians are being warned the coronavirus restrictions will be in place for many more weeks, despite the country's rate of infection slowing and an estimation that unemployment rate will be doubled.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has warned it will still be many weeks before the restrictions put in place to contain COVID-19 are eased, saying that a spike in cases could still happen at any time.

Meanwhile, a new Treasury analysis shows the unemployment rate is expected to almost double in the June quarter to 10 per cent.

That's the equivalent of more than 700,000 Australians losing their job by the middle of the year and the first time since 1994 that Australia's unemployment rate has hit double digits.

People in Australia must stay at least 1.5 metres away from others and gatherings are limited to two people unless you are with your family or household.

If you believe you may have contracted the virus, call your doctor (don’t visit) or contact the national Coronavirus Health Information Hotline on 1800 020 080. If you are struggling to breathe or experiencing a medical emergency, call 000.
